You will need a tape measure, pen or pencil, paper and calculator to hand.
When measuring a room, simply measure from the furthest skirting board at the longest and widest points of the room.
Take care to measure into any bay windows and door frames, as carpet should end under a door.
Always add 5cm (2?) minimum to both the length and width of the carpet measurements.
The majority of carpets are 4 metres and sometimes 5 metres in width,therefore, once you have ascertained the room width, you will need to check that it is less than the width of the carpet you are buying to avoid any joins.
When measuring your room, you should always ensure that you keep the flooring running in the same direction to maintain texture, pattern and colour consistency. If you change the direction then the pattern, texture and the pile of the carpet will reflect the light differently.

First, measure your hall as if it was a square room.
Remember to measure into doorways and to maximum points in the hall.
Make sure when measuring the landing that you measure from the threshold of the door across the landing and over the nosing down onto the first step.
Note where the stairs enter the hall.

The width of the carpet ordered has to be rounded up to 4 or 5 metres in width depending on the carpet.
Count how many stairs there are.
Next, measure the width and length of one step.
For ease, and if these are all the same, you can then multiply this by the number of steps.
This will then give you the width and length you need.

The most economical way to fit a stair carpet is to use the width of the carpet cut in strips across the width and fitted to the stairs with joins where the riser meets the step. Fitting in this way minimises wastage and ensures the pile runs in the same direction as the hall or landing, thereby avoiding shade variation.
A qualified carpet fitter will be able to measure your hall, stairs and landing to minimise wastage and ensure a professional matched installation.
